So, this guy Cadu Tenório has been destroying the Brazil noise and avant scene. And I really hate it when people us words like “avant” and “jazz” and “pop” to describe shit, but I’m really talking avant here in the same performance-way it was intended to be experienced, because “Canto II” is not only a sonic journey, but a visual one by-way of articulation of Juçara Marçal. There’s such a stark rhythm Cadu Tenório puts down that matches the equally desolate backing atmosphere —par for course with a feint construction project and tea-pot whistle— in “Canto II” that Juçara Marçal lyrics (as I can only interpret her vocally, but) can be an array of emotions through her enunciation of self.
It’s sorta like my first year of college when I was a film student, and they had us do this project where we make a short movie, and when it was played with sound, the visuals had to take on a completely separate emotion than the sound. I hated this program, so I filmed a bunch of really trite symbolism and absurd metaphor for the visual, and when they turned on the audio, it was just me trashing all my teachers and their students… in a light-hearted and LOL way, but the department director caught wind and wasn’t happy. In the same light, “Canto II” is the soundtrack to me running out of Wright State University for the last time as an undergraduate (having gotten into Ohio State University). I was so happy! Paired with Juçara Marçal & Cadu Tenório, though. It may totally change the feel to me making a pretty bad decision, although I still don’t think so, as I’ve been given the opportunity to relate “Canto II” to something completely superfluous in my past. I’m all about the turn-around. Quantity. So if you’re looking for quality, look no further:
