Kowton’s “Bits & Pieces” from his new 12-inch Whities002, via Whities, could fit into a club, or a construction site, or perhaps even a hotel lobby. Machinal techno beats and some jazzy, simple synth work paired together equals a kind of club music that has only been made possible by the innovations happening in the past couple of years. Post dubstep, post industrial, post Night Slugs has made the whole genre thing a little outdated, but that’s fine. Kowton is making solid club music. Though all three tracks are major in their own ways, “Bits & Pieces” hits hardest because of its intense simplicity and attention to detail. It’s hypnotic without being sleepy, calculated without being cold, experimental without being over-complicated.
