The room is mirrored from wall-to-wall, but only the DJ booth is backed by windows, framing the Chinatown street-life. What is probably 300 people dancing looks like 900 in the three-walls’ reflection. Silhouetted against the glean and shimmer of NYC are six turn’t figures hyping with the crowd. The only light comes in strobes, or is spiraling colors lightly in a corner, and everything looks unassuming. Swim Team just released the heat.
Izy and Ace begin SWIM TEAM TRAX 2 perfectly with a sampled mashing intro of vocals (having ended TRAX 1 with talk about Swim Team). But then the expletives drop and there’s the most blown-out, stand-up bass plucked-sting beat, following layered and reverbed Izy. Then the grind beat eases in with shoe-squeaking minimalist rythm composition, not overbearing of Izy’s lyrical content, yet remaining hype, with them HA HAs. Even when the instrumental becomes quieter, AceM0 just gets the crowd popping harder, accenting Izy’s magic on the mic, echoing out into a city that shouldn’t sleep. “Who’s up?”
Only briefly have listeners heard Kanyon’s “Fuckin Tha DJ” thanks to Plastician on Rinse FM. But this ain’t some one-minute cut, or censored with a British accent, no. “Fuckin Tha DJ” starts out the Side-B of SWIM TEAM TRAX 2 on the run, with a beat that’s steady, but fluxing itself in and out of position, paring toms fading within, metal-whipped snares, and a clip cocked and ready to unload. Triple barreled. Hammer headed. Then the claps and synth ensnare the track in a super rubber-band ball let loose in the NYC streets, and there-after is the mood of Kanyon’s non-stop and on-going peak, aimlessly racing through the alley-ways, causing mayhem upon the neighborhoods, all in the name of party. Pants: off.
