Jenny Hval is brilliant. She’s created a sense of humor via lyrical content that appeals to a bro’s snicker and flipped it, for real. I know all her listeners hear this humor, I know. But specifically, within her newest Sacred Bones LP, Apocalypse, girl (TMT Review), Hval brings out them deep-journal zones, unveiling a core of self that’s akin to no real narrator, but maybe. Actually, WHO is the only thing that I’m least concerned with when listening to Apocalypse, girl, no matter how many pronouns she uses or characteristic signifiers. Which is also clever because typically I hate imagining the ego presented whilst anyone is singing, or hearing them singing.
Anyhow, not about me. Well sorta RE:soft-dick-rock. But “Sabbath” presents all of this humor and trans-narrative intentions. And the video is fucking triplicated-out, complete with spot on wavy-arm-man choreography commissioned by Paula Abdul. Also, North American tour dates here. Playing at Rough Trade in the city of Sacred Bones’ office location. That’s it. Her shit is out now on LP. GRIP!
