Home to some of today’s most outstanding post-punk purveyors, it was only a matter of time until a handful of Sacred Bones’s signees decided to come together and put their underground bona fides to the service of an ass-kicking, punk rock multi-headed monster. Cheena, the Brooklyn-bred five-piece featuring Pharmakon’s Margaret Chardiet and members of Crazy Spirit and Hank Wood & the Hammerhead, is such a creature. Following last year’s self-titled EP, Cheena has announced their first full-length album, Spend the night with…, a spiritual and sonic homage to the debauched nights of summertime New York City.
Accordingly, Cheena’s music bears the markings of mid-70s NYC murk. Think of The Heartbreakers crawling out of a dark alley, the no-holds-barred garage dirt of The Dictators or even Cleveland-transplants The Dead Boys. That’s the primal energy — bordering on punk but still glammed-up enough to fit alongside The New York Dolls — we find in the album’s first single “Car,” which you can stream below.
Spend the night with… is out on August 5 via Sacred Bones Records.
