Two L.A. jammers — Cameron Stallones a.k.a. Sun Araw and M. Geddes Gengras — have taken their underground cred and done what any easygoing, moderately successful musicians would do: go to Jamaicaaaa, mon. The two already collaborated with The Congos on Icon Give Thank, which they recorded while living in Portmore, Jamaica. Now, in a new partnership with the veteran Stones Throw label, Stallones and MGG have created an imprint that showcases underground talent from the Jamaican dancehall scene.
Duppy Gun Productions already has a few 12-inches to its name, but now that Stones Throw has thrown weight behind the imprint, Stallones and MGG have decided to release a proper compilation. First, Multiply was christened with beats from Matthewdavid, Aaron Coyes (Peaking Lights), Alex Gray (D/P/I), and Butchy Fuego (San Gabriel). Then, Duppy’s founders took a trip back to Jamaica with a portable recording setup to get vocal takes. Featuring I Jahbar, Bookfa, Early One, Lukan I, and other rising talent, the comp explores new breeds of cosmic dancehall, dub, and R&B. Multiply will see a vinyl release on November 18 and you can catch a video premiere for an album teaser over at the Chocolate Grinder or an audio embed for Early One & I Jahbar’s “Mad” off the album below; meanwhile, Diplo will be plotting his next move…
