Bridging the worlds of composition and the club, Swiss-born/Berlin-based producer GIL makes dark music that is both highly physical and rooted in structure. Drawing on his history studying both modern dance and classical music, he brings a dancer’s knowledge of how the body moves along with a composer’s deep understanding of music theory to the table, and then builds a heavy beat under it.
GIL is now about to formally debut with Orchids & Wasps, an EP he will be releasing this week through Swiss imprint Danse Noire. Loud, layered, and at times punishing, the record is an overwhelming and awesome experience (what the label aptly describes as an “onslaught of body shocks”). Helping the producer take his bow, the record’s side B includes reinterpretations of album track “Onset” from fellow-travellers J.G. Biberkopf and Imaabs, who both pull apart the source material in their own compelling ways.
Today at Tiny Mix Tapes, we are proud to premiere J.G. Biberkopf’s “Onset” remix. Bringing up the ambience while preserving its mood of gloom, Biberkopf turns the insanely harsh original track into a somewhat softer experience, giving a nice counter to GIL’s own blitz. Stream “Onset” (J.G. Biberkopf remix) below.
As if all this weren’t enough, J.G. Biberkopf has also been announced on the roster for next year’s SHAPE, the multi-platform meetinghouse for the vanguard in European music and sound art (this year’s SHAPE artists included Klara Lewis, Masayoshi Fujita, and Peder Mannerfelt, among others). Nominated to SHAPE by Prague’s MeetFactory, J.G. Biberkopf will be performing at the upcoming SHAPE showcase at the Novas Frequências festival in Rio de Janeiro.
GIL’s Orchids & Wasps will be available November 25 via Danse Noire. Not to be overlooked, Biberkopf also recently released Ecologies II, the follow up to his excellent 2015 LP, available from KNIVES.
