At the heart of the “Southern Cosmic” scene lies a quietly prolific cassette label known as Hooker Vision. HV is run by Rachel and Grant Evans, a partnership that extends from running the label to being in a real live band together (Quiet Evenings). Judging from these recent releases from Hooker Vision, those Evenings together have been abandoned in favor of greedy, selfish, egotistic solo pursuits. Drama!
Rachel generally performs under her moniker Motion Sickness of Time Travel, through which she’s become well known as a dream dealer and sooth sayer for the new new age sect. Alpha Piscium marks a return to the cassette form after a year of releasing limited monthly CD-Rs. Welcome back, Rachel.
Grant has offered us an enticing batch that he hopes will “alienate fans of his former work,” according to the release notes. Lacerations is said to be a study of “tensions and contrasts” that he decided to release while briefly hospitalized. Mr. Evans previous work outside of Quiet Evenings has generally been under the guise of Crippling or Nova Scotian Arms.
Both tapes were available from Hooker Vision, but Alpha Piscium sold out at the source pretty quick (Lacerations still has a few copies left). Digital is still available via MSOTT’s Bandcamp. Scope out “The Blossoms” from Alpha Piscium and the title track from Lacerations below:
