When you look up pictures of shredding overlord J Mascis and classic rock young-blood Kurt Vile, you find the following two consistencies: both dudes are usually clutching a guitar like it’s landmine that they’ve got to save their platoon buddies from… and both dudes’ hair look totally, hilariously, anachronistically absurd.
But come March, you might see another interesting thing when you Google these two: a lot more buddy pics. Both Mascis and Vile have records coming out that month — Mascis’ Several Shades of Why is due March 15 on Sub Pop and Vile’s Smoke Ring for My Halo is due March 8 on Matador — so the two are teaming up for a string of US dates to celebrate. The pairing of this guitar-centric duo is not exactly a stretch, considering Vile makes an appearance on Several Shades (as do a bunch of other luminaries like Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew, Band of Horses’ Ben Bridwell, The Black Heart Procession’s Pall Jenkins, and more), but it’s nonetheless momentous news when you consider the fact that it’s probably been decades since this much hair hit the road at one time.
