Picture me bursting through your door (it’s okay, we hypothetically know each other in this scenario), pausing to catch my breath, and then blurting out the following news: drone master Tim Hecker will be releasing a new LP in October! You are obviously thrilled but also slightly envious that I received the sudden news first, as it is always a pissing contest between the two of us about this kind of shit, hypothetically. Then as the excitement settles, I admit that it’s not entirely new material. You scowl at me, privately pleased that the news isn’t so valuable after all. You mock me, claiming this is like when I got excited about that Tim Hecker download that kept crashing on us.
But then I sell you on how absolutely amazing and interesting this material will be by telling you that the new record, titled Dropped Pianos, is a rare peek behind the curtains to the working process of Hecker’s Ravedeath, 1972 (TMT Review) and features “sketch pieces” recorded in 2010 in preparation for what would become a top contender for 2011’s record of the year. I then add that all of Dropped Piano’s compositions are piano driven and minimal in nature. You then turn off the Eluvium record that has been playing in the background this whole time and admit your defeat.
The new LP will be released on October 10 on Kranky. You can listen to a clip from it here; yes, it’s amazing.
