So you've just bought an album, say The Backstreet Boys' classic Millenium. You're sitting on your bed thinking "Man, these guys are SICK, but I think the album would be better if the lyrics from 'Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely' were laid over the beats of 'I Want It That Way,' and that the whole thing was in a different order." Sure, you keep listening, but deep down inside, you know world peace might come to fruition if only you could mix those tracks yourself.
Perhaps as a child, indie-electro-hip hop artist Domer felt the same way about Millenium. And perhaps that's what inspired him to create the potentially fantastic My Favorite EP.
Here's the deal: Domer recorded the lyrics for the EP's five tracks over a metronome with no beat, and he's asked those with an ear for music -- and you, refined TMT reader, certainly have one of those -- to create their own backing tracks for the songs and send back the finished project by the end of October. The vocals are available here as MP3 files or here as WAVs.
(Really?) Yes, really, and it gets better. (No, it can't get better, can it?) Oh yes, it most certainly can.
Once participants have sent in their creations, Domer will post the finished versions for download. Fans can pick their favorites, leaving the specific songs and order of the EP up to each listener to decide for themselves. And, of course, Domer wants everyone to send him their personal Favorite EP.
"I wanted to blur the line between artist and listener," he says. "The direction of the album is in everyone's hands but mine and will continue to be till the project is over. It's cool because it really gets people involved in the process." True that, Domer, true that.
How awesome is this? I would say pretty fucking awesome.
