Tortoise get creepy on film score with Blair Witch director Eduardo Sánchez

·

Major films love getting indie post-rock bands to score their movies on the cheap. John Williams is just so damn expensive these days, and so are Three 6 Mafia, with their Oscar and whatnot (by the way, did they ever get that cooking show going?). Post-rock bands are picky, though. They’ll only do inspirational sports movies (Explosions in the Sky for Friday Night Lights, Mogwai for Zidane) or horror (GY!BE for 28 Days Later).

Chicago’s influential, genre-blending instrumentalists Tortoise have just finished recording for a new film in the latter genre by Blair Witch director Eduardo Sánchez, titled Lovely Molly. The psychological horror film depicts a newlywed young woman who returns to her childhood home to discover something bad/scary, but it’s all in her head… or is it??? That’s the twist! The script was written by Charlie Kaufman’s twin brother, I think. Anyway, Tortoise just recorded the score for the film, which is set to premiere on September 14 at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.

In other Tortoise news, John McEntire has informed the public of some international shows this fall and the possibility that the production of a new Tortoise record could happen this winter! Chicago has some really long winters, however, so it might be a while.
