Tomahawk announce vinyl collection, so you can just put those Mr. Bungle/Helmet/Jesus Lizard records in the trash

·

Somehow, there are records involving Mike Patton (of Faith No More/Mr. Bungle/Fantômas/you get the idea) that haven’t been put out in every conceivable format. This puzzles me. Mike Patton nurtures the sort of fandom where I can only assume every single one of his fans owns every thing he’s done in every way he’s done it. He’s the kind of guy who could release a new single on a pile of spaghetti with no explanation toward use/reason and his fans will buy three. In fact, they may well prefer it that way.

Which is why it’s so weird that Tomahawk’s three records have never been released on vinyl. For those who forgot and those who lost track of Patton’s 700 projects, Tomahawk featured Mike Patton, John Stanier (Helmet/Battles), Duane Denison (Jesus Lizard), Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle), and Kevin Rutmanis (The Melvins). Some might refer to the band as a “supergroup” and, sure, that’s just fine. FACT reports that, for Record Store Day (April 21, mark your calendars), Ipecac is putting out From Eponymous to Anonymous, a vinyl box set containing the band’s three full-lengths: 2001’s Tomahawk, 2003’s Mit Gas, and 2007’s Anonymous. The set will be limited to 5000 copies, presumably all of which will be picked up by individuals locked in arguments about whether King for a Day…Fool for a Lifetime or Album of the Year was better.

Those arguments will be temporarily silenced by the news that Tomahawk is putting out a new record. Ipecac says that the new album should be out this summer. The label also stated that the forthcoming work will be a Detroit techno-inspired soundtrack for a conversation Dario Argento once had with Eddie Murphy. That last part’s not true, but why wouldn’t it be?
