Demdike Stare release live album, and yes, you can genuinely hear the audience being possessed by demons

·

Has anyone addressed how to correctly pronounce the “demdike” in Demdike Stare yet? I’ve intuitively been going with “dem-dee-kee” ever since I first became familiar with the duo — partially because it sounds correct, partially because, of the two obvious pronunciations, it sounds cooler, and partially because I don’t want to inadvertently offend a particular female demographic by going with the alternative. Consider that alternate pronunciation. Now, suppose you’re in public, in a notably gay-friendly neighborhood. Can you imagine the deathly looks you might receive if you said something along the lines of, “[mumbling]… Demdike [incoherent] last night, and it was one of the most frightening experiences of my life. The only thing that I could possibly consider more frightening is hanging out with them for an extended period of time. Their minds are almost certainly chemically imbalanced, and such weirdness clearly has no place in society.” The possible misconstructions would have dire consequences on your otherwise stellar liberal reputation.

So, dem-dee-kee it is. As if we’ve even had a chance to thoroughly wrap our heads around the tremendous Elemental (TMT Review), Demdike Stare have announced the release of 15 Mai 2011: Live at Golden Pudel Club, a 59-minute live album due out… well, you’re reading this. That means it’s out. I repeat: it’s out now. The recording took place on May 15 of last year at the Golden Pudel Club in Hamburg, Germany, and considering the album’s one track status, the inclination is to compare it to their other mixes, like Osmosis or Industrial Desert. Though, what exactly would we be comparing? Their music is a mystery, wrapped in an enigma, shrouded by an apparition, and enclosed in, let’s say… a casket. Yeah, that seems fitting. It’s worthwhile nonetheless.
