Evidently, New Girl is a very good show. People keep telling me this, but I just haven’t gotten around to watching it. Is it on Netflix? I think it might be. Anyway, I don’t know anything about New Girl, so here’s something I do know: She & Him are releasing their third record, Volume 3, via Merge on May 7 (or May 13 for UK/Europe). If you don’t know — and were incredibly curious about why I brought up New Girl seemingly apropos of nothing — She & Him are the folk-pop duo consisting of actress/singer/songwriter Zooey Deschanel (pictured above) and non-actor/singer/songwriter M. Ward (pictured above in three stages of life).
Though Deschanel has obviously been busy with New Girl, writing songs for the 2011 Winnie the Pooh movie, and probably a million other things, she wasn’t too busy to write 11 of Volume 3’s 14 songs (the other three are covers). Contributing to the forthcoming record is a fairly lengthy list of collaborators, including NRBQ’s Joey Spampinato, Mike Watt, Tilly and the Wall, Rilo Kiley’s Pierre de Reeder, and DeVotchka’s Tom Hagerman. Sadly, Mike Watt’s participation does not seem to involve a cover of The Minutemen’s “Political Song for Michael Jackson to Sing.” Missed opportunity, truly.
Shortly after the record’s release, She & Him will head out into the wilds of America for a month-long tour. Providing support on a pair of dates will be the duo of Emmylou Harris & Rodney Cowell, while Camera Obscura will open much of the tour’s second half. Now I guess I should get to watching New Girl.
