When I was a child, I went on a field trip to the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans. Part of the field trip involved walking through a glass tunnel, the likes of which was surrounded by water and aquatic creatures. I hated this, because the most noticeable of these aquatic creatures was the stingray, a creature I was deathly afraid of. Not because of any threat a stingray poses, but because of their creepy little underside faces (actually just a mouth). Anyway, while walking through this window and looking straight down at my shoes, my friend remarked that it would be crazy if the tunnel suddenly imploded. I agreed that it would be crazy, but I was still more concerned about stingrays. This is as good a time as any to mention that Chicago heavy drone/post-rock act Implodes are going on tour. In early May, they’ll be playing a quick string of dates centered primarily on the Northeastern United States.
Was that a go-almost-nowhere story only mildly related to the focus of this news article? Perhaps. But perhaps it was also a way to reflect the way Implodes tracks gradually build and hypnotize, even as they seem like they’re not moving to a clear point? Perhaps it was. Nah, it was totally just a story about implosions I remembered as a kid. Still, you can go ahead and check out a video for “Necronomics off their recently-released Kranky album Recurring Dreams below. Go ahead and do that before I regale you with a story about being pushed into a pool’s deep end during my friend’s eighth birthday. I couldn’t swim and it was scary!
