Always have a safe word. About a year ago, I put a stop to the forced sexual intercourse perpetuated by an unnamed cable company, and my other, more gratifying interests have consequently thanked me for it — through a proportional increase in brain capacity and a newfound appreciation for elastic hats. But wait, what about that ~300 channel appeal to my base pleasures? Fond memories do remain, but only for a select few networks, one of which persists not only as a harbinger of utterly fucking absurd programming, but also as a surprising source for worthwhile tunes, originating from, well… somebody over there. Recollection otherwise comes easy. The intermissions may very well have been my first exposure to Flying Lotus.
Lucky for us, and a shout-out to their marketing department for responding accordingly to e-mails in the vein of, “HEY, WHAT WAS THAT SONG THAT PLAYED AT 2:13AM LAST FRIDAY, RIGHT AFTER THE SHOW WITH THE TALKING FRIES???,” Adult Swim has continued their Adult Swim Singles program, a summer offering of at least one track per week from an array of artists surely earning the approval of TMT, and presumably you as well. Last year’s edition featured tracks from Death Grips, Liars, The Field, Com Truise, and others. This year’s edition has to-be-revealed tracks from Andy Stott, Lightning Bolt, Marnie Stern, Captain Murphy feat. Viktor Vaughn, and more, with size aficionados Run The Jewels (El-P & Killer Mike) leading off the series last week with “36” Chain,” and Kitty dropping the Hot Sugar-produced “Barbie Jeep” this morning.
