Get your brains ready, because German head-scrambler Florian Hecker just announced that he’s back with another full-length brain-whisk entitled Articulação on Editions Mego. I just played the excerpt from “Modulator (… meaningless, affectless, out of nothing …)” that’s up on SoundCloud on my stereo and let me tell you, my cats are super excited. And when I say “excited” what I actually mean is “they somehow plotted a tandem attack against my speakers that I was only barely able to prevent before they ripped the cones to shreds.” I’ll embed the track below if you are in the mood for a cool sonic experience paired with a possible cat attack.
Anyhow, I’m getting ahead of myself. Maybe you’re all like, “Who the heck is Florian Hecker?” not because you don’t know who he is but because you think you’re funny and good at puns. You’re not. Florian Hecker, though, is an experimental producer who, through a series of releases, including 2011’s Speculative Solution (TMT Review) and 2009’s Acid in the Style of David Tudor (TMT Review), has plumbed the depths of noise and psychoacoustics. Most recently he released 2012’s Chimerization, a three-part collaboration with Iranian philosopher Reza Negarestani who provided an “experimental libretto” for the piece in English, German, and Farsi.
Articulação finds Hecker collaborating with Negarestani yet again on the libretto for “Hinge,” which conveys a “complex scene in which the two obelisks of the script — one from the perspective of nature and one from the perspective of culture — are recited simultaneously in an informational yet dramatic style.” Different versions of “Hinge” open and close the album. Included as well on these tracks are vocal contributions from vocalist and composer Joan La Barbara, as well as Sugata Bose and Anne Kohler. Mastering is by Rashad “Obviously can time travel because how else could one human do as much cool stuff as he does” Becker. The album is due out March 31 and is available for pre-order right here.
