Lit City Trax may have departed from its footwork beginnings — having first released the TEKLIFE trilogy of DJ Rashad’s Welcome to the Chi, DJ Spinn’s What U Need, and Traxman’s The Architek — but the label continues to push forward with some of the best, most exciting contemporary dance releases, including last year’s I’m Fine EP by Visionist and this year’s The New Klassiks Jersey club mixtape by UNIIQU3.
Lit City’s newest project is a 26-minute EP by DJ Marfox, the pioneering centerpiece of the incredibly exciting, diverse, and experimental Afro-Portugese dance music coming out of Lisbon (spearheaded last year by Lisbon’s fantastic Príncipe imprint). On his six-track Lucky Punch EP, Marfox’s sound is rooted in both kuduro (functional dance music from Angola) and tarraxinha (a slower electronic-influenced form of Angolan dance music), all bent and twisted into his unique soundworld.
Lucky Punch is out May 27 digitally and on LP via Lit City Trax. Listen to the EP’s first track “Terra Batida” and scope the tracklisting below, and then look for his follow-up EP, his fifth, on Príncipe later this year.
