Twitter reportedly in talks to purchase SoundCloud; I can’t wait to soundcleet my audible reaction to this!

·

It’s the year of huge-ass corporate acquisitions, as Comcast bids for almost total control over the right to skull-fuck Americans with an oversized malfunctioning cable wire (don’t ask me how), and less threateningly, as Twitter apparently mulls the purchase of super-cool Berlin-based music streaming service SoundCloud. That’s all. No details, since “people familiar with both companies” are surprisingly disinclined to share additional information, and really, what more do you need to know until the deed is done and you start seeing SoundCloud embeds directly within tweets? Oh wait, that’s already a possibility.

Thus, who knows what the (rumored) acquisition will mean for the common folk, but clarity does come on the subject of Twitter’s motivations. Apparently I wrote an article on this at the time of its announcement, and the fact that it took me a good several hours to remember is clearly a testament to the aching success that the Twitter #music app has had since it was initially created. It’s since been officially killed off, btw, so consider the company’s (rumored) interest in purchasing SoundCloud another (rumored) attempt to gain a foothold in the music biz.

Elsewhere, like a male senior citizen without the aid of a certain blue pill, Twitter has exhibited disappointing growth according to some investors since the company went public last fall. A costly acquisition like SoundCloud might just be what the company needs to keep those smarmy bastards happy. “Expand your reach,” business jargon, etc.
