If you came of age by 2001, give or take a year, it’s likely The Adventures of Pete & Pete was a big part of your childhood. Then, I don’t need to explain to you how the Nickelodeon TV show shaped many a kid’s music tastes: with a theme song composed by Mark Mulcahy, Iggy Pop playing a side character’s dad, and a veritable who’s-who of 90s alt-rock showing up for cameos and guest roles (Gordon Gano, Michael Stipe, and a long, long etcetera).
I guess we’re not alone. The questionably named but undoubtedly ass-kicking Tennessee six-piece Diarrhea Planet have released a video paying the show hearty homage. You may not be a big fan of Diarrhea Planet’s “punk rock as seen by indie kids”, but their songs are fun to hear and this new video is indeed a distinguished effort. The sextet didn’t just recreate Pete & Pete’s opening credits for the clip; they went the extra mile and shot it in the actual house where the show was originally recorded, and brought out Petunia, Artie, and even Mr. Tastee. Hell, if other sites get to indulge in vapid click-bait nostalgia so much, why can’t we get a pass once in a while?
In case you were wondering, “Platinum Girls” is a new song, and it’s slated to appear on an upcoming EP. It’s set to be titled Aliens in the Outfield (did you expect any less from the people who brought you “Ghost with a Boner”?) and will be out on November 18, via Infinity Cat.
