What the? How egotistical does Microsoft Word have to be, following its recent achievement of self-awareness, that it has to recruit musicians to “remix” its own programming? Obviously, the whole idea doesn’t make any sense, given that the musicians in question probably have zero interest in revolutionizing the enthralling world of word processing, and likewise, given that “Application” isn’t in reference to an application at all! That’s the name of British electronic duo Martin and Richard Dust, who released their debut album System Fork this past June. A restrained and almost minimal take on industrial techno that album was, and apparently the Dusts have the connects to make things… not necessarily better, but different.
Seven System Fork tracks have been remixed by seven different artists for the sake of a new release called Applied Remixes, out on vinyl and digital formats November 3. Those those who were chosen to choose songs to remix (and who subsequently did) include: Pye Corner Audio, Beneath, Geiom, Scanner, Russell Haswell in the midst of frightening small children, and SND’s Mark Fell. Application even took it upon themselves to remix a track of their own, understanding either a potential room for improvement, or they secretly aspire to join the ranks of the esteemed Top 40.
Can Application remix a hit on par with a personal favorite, “Party in the USA”? We’ll have to wait and see!
Applied Remixes tracklisting:
01. Front End (Remixed by Pye Corner Audio)
02. Flange 7 (Remixed by Beneath)

04. Swuth (Remixed by Application)
05. Ambient B (Remixed by Scanner)
06. Cron Job (Remixed by Russell Haswell)
