London producer Lukid released one of my favorite records of 2012, Lonely at the Top, which sounds like hip-hop and techno that got rained on in a gutter, but in the best way. Later this month, Mute offshoot Liberation Technologies will be releasing Lukid’s latest EP, Crawlers. Debuting in digital format with a vinyl release to be announced in the future, Crawlers continues the tape-driven, bizarre dance slabs first explored on Lonely at the Top, but perhaps with a more functional approach.
In advance of the new EP, the UK musician has shared a stroboscopic video for opening cut “Nine,” which shows colors flashing onto various angles of an empty, 3D-rendered building. Then the colors morph into increasingly surreal visuals, and we have a really bad trip. “Nine” has a similar sonic quality to Lukid’s past work, but seems crafted for a warehouse techno party, with a kick drum that bathes most of the mix in warm distortion. Fun fact: Evian Christ sampled “Nine“‘s synths for his own song, “Propeller,” from this year’s Waterfall EP. Lukid, you better be getting a lil’ taste of that Kanye money… Crawlers is out on September 29 — watch “Nine” below and imagine you’re the Dancing Guy, dancing away at a party of one.
