Five years is a pretty long time frame to give when alluding to the possibility of a reunion album, but thankfully, Sleater-Kinneacs worldwide have been somewhat held over by “free-spirited” bookstore owners threatening to burn things to the ground, lead singer Corin Tucker serenading us with presumably a band full of Corin Tuckers, and Janet Weiss being the coolest vagabond around, drumming things for various bands since Sleater-Kinney officially (temporarily) broke up back in June 2006. Carrie Brownstein made the semi-promise of five years back in 2010, and following a curious single addition to the band’s recently announced box-set, it’s now totally official: Sleater-Kinney will release No Cities to Love on January 20 in the US and January 19 internationally, courtesy of Sub Pop.
Fans not exactly anxious to relive the deliberate (and some would say, enjoyable) aural damage caused by their last album The Woods will be happy to know that John Goodmanson (producer of Dig Me Out, among other, earlier S-K albums) returned for this newest one. Likewise, Brownstein tells NPR about the willed and painstaking process of the album’s creation: “In the end we were all more scrutinizing with our own parts than we ever have been. I think we didn’t want to take any second of the song for granted, everything had to have an intention and earn its place.”
A reunion without a reunion tour? Silly you for thinking that. Dates after the new track:
