DJ Nigga Fox returns this month with the Noite E Dia EP on Príncipe

·

After a relatively quiet release schedule in 2014 — with the sole release being an EP by Tia Maria Produções — the incredible Príncipe Discos label is going hard in the paint in 2015, with already three releases under its belt. Just last week, the purveyors of Afro-Portuguese dance music released new 12-inches by CDM and Nidia Minaj, and today we caught wind of Noite E Dia, a new EP by arguably their most critically acclaimed artist, DJ Nigga Fox.

While releases like DJ Marfox’s Lucky Punch and the Príncipe split from production crews B.N.M./P.D.D.G. have showcased both the heart and variety of Lisbon’s long-thriving dance scene, DJ Nigga Fox’s 2013 EP O Meu Estilo showcased how bizarre things could get. With Angolan dance mixing jaggedly with progressive kudoro, tarraxinha, and beyond, all of it couched in aggressive syncopation and accents only slightly offbeat, the EP advanced a new sound to Western ears at the same time it advanced underground Lisbon dance music as a whole. And if the newest tracks on Nigga Fox’s SoundCloud are anything to go by, Noite E Dia should continue this dizzying trajectory.

Noite E Dia is out March 24. As with all Príncipe releases, the EP is extremely limited and features hand-painted artwork. Hit up Bleep and Boomkat for copies.
