Unless you’ve been living under a rock (I mean, one of those really old-fashioned rocks that doesn’t have a Keurig and Wi-Fi and a Chromebook with TMT pre-bookmarked), you already know that Sea and Cake mainstay and general all-around “good at stuff” dude Sam Prekop’s new album, The Republic came out earlier this year on Thrill Jockey, radically and FOREVER completely fucking REDEFINING some sort of something regarding something-or-other! (I’m not sure what exactly, because I don’t really listen to or care about music in ANY WAY, but I’ve been told it’s something about “modular synthesizers.”)
And if you knew all of that first shit up there, then you probably also know this second batch of shit about how the entire first side of the album was specifically written “to accompany an art installation of the same name by David Hartt.” Am I still making cogent sense? Splendid! Moving on!
So, two things then: 1) Hartt and Prekop have collaborated once again, this time on a new music video for The Republic cut “Weather Vane,” which features, apparently, shots of “Prekop at his synth, as well as idyllic shots of a utopian cityscape.” Sounds like some serious Pop-Up Video material to be sure! Check it out for yourself down below. (I think it’ll be down there? Again, I don’t really know how this shit works!)
2) Prekop is fixin’ to take his giant synths on the road. I heard that he even outfitted wheels for the biggest one so that he could drive it like an Econoline van on what his titanic press release is heroically calling “a stretch of dates with his Sea and Cake bandmate Archer Prewitt.” Astoundingly, the duo will be “playing as a duo” on this trek, and they’ll also be “performing improvised synth/guitar duets followed by a short set of classic Sea and Cake tracks.” Wow. I cannot wait to see and hear all of that stuff I just mentioned. I tell you what! Boy howdy! Sure enough! That’s all, folks! YOU AIN’T JUST WHISTLING DIXIE.
