Single Lash - Burn Burn

·

I gotta admit, the health goth movement has me stumped. Now, before you go poo-pooing me for being dismissive of hip trends or… whatever… remember that I am writing for a music blog where the combined sales of every album on our top 50 probably wouldn’t be enough for us to buy us an all-inclusive trip Yeezlantis Spa and Resort. And I’m writing about Single Lash, so they’re pretty hip, and I’m pretty healthy. And gothy.

I imagine the movement will eventually grow to include “mountain goths.” There’s nothing like a good hike to validate your fear of the inevitable. Even the simple pleasure of a campfire and s’mores carries with it the stench of the ultimate – death and his more personable companion, love, “smother the air” on Single Lash’s new single, “Burn”. Single Lash began as a three piece band from Austin, who played gloomy drops of nostalgic pop like the residue from a double cone of Boardwalk Choc ‘n Chip. The group certainly knows how to make watching the embers of your eternal desires fly away on carbon wings seem romantic. Taking a late night drive to reconcile with your darkest emotions… feeling the firmness of the bass and kick drum and knowing that life is pointless but that’s okay.

For the cassette release of Soft As Glass, crooner Nicolas Nadeau replaced the rest of the band with… himself, and adopted a more abrasive, industrial method of coping with it all. Now Nadeau has brought in Colin Foster and Neil Lord of Future Museums to flesh out Single Lash’s third incarnation. “Burn” is just one of many mope-jams on their 60+ minute cassette dropping on Mirror Universe.
