I can always rely on Sophomore Lounge Records to find the grittiest of pretty rock music. There’s always a pleasantness to the frown-faced tunes that roll out of vibrated strings and drum-kit hits. Tina (who has connection to Giving Up, another favorite Sophomore Lounge Records main-stay) rings out the “Too Cold” feelings of season in a sincere rendering. ‘Cause she’s right! Nobody wants to walk their dog in the cold, including your dog. And you and Grams are finally going out to dinner with week because the past two months she’s been stuck inside due to icy walking conditions. Yet, your bastion of warmth is right were you started the day: your bed. Include, “with you,” in there, and not only do you physically have Tina’s lyrics in “Too Cold,” but also exactly what you need to keep a positive mindset in the most mentally testable seasons of the year.
Sophomore Lounge Records may read as if they’re a bit laid-back, and their music certainly reflects this literal attitude, but the ownership over there had a rough time recently in Chicago, and it’s a total bummer. Luckily, they’ve selected a full range of downer-pick-me-up releases in their existence, have a catalog to draw from to help ‘em alleviate their woes, and Tina’s carefree front in “Too Cold” turns the bummer atmosphere into a sing-along, melting all of the negative feelings by way of belting out some familiar vibes with the windows down in 45-degree weather.
