If ever there were a time for yearning acoustic guitars and sparse, mournful melodies, it’s summer. Move over, party jams using popular internet memes for lyrics and bro-y tan people dubstep anthems! Your new king of summer is Brooklyn-based songwriter Zachary Cale, whose work evokes Bob Dylan, Nick Cave, a li’l bit of Morricone and a dash of Badalamenti, plus car wheels on a gravel road, lost love, and traveling carnivals that disappear on down the road with the same ephemerality as a June day.
Named “NYC’s Best Songwriter” by The Village Voice, Cale is set to drop his fifth album, Duskland, on August 7. No Quarter will release this beauty on good, solid ol’ fashioned CD and crisp, modern vinyl. Backing Cale on this thing are bassist James Preston, drum lord Ethan Schmid, and longtime musical partners keyboardist Phil Glauberzon and percussionist Ryan Johnson. Cale has also enlisted special guests, like harmony singer (and co-writer of “I Forged The Bullet”) Alfra Martini, drummer/percussionist Otto Hauser (Vetiver, Cass McCombs), masters of the steel guitar Phil Sterk and Brady Sansone, jazz/classical piano man Robert Boston, and trumpet dude Carter Yasutake (St. Vincent, Beirut).
