This is DANCE MIX WATCH. I’m posting the best mixes coming in right now.
DMW #9 is the debut mix from Banjee Report member Mister Wallace, who has been been making waves recently with “Whoremoan”, the SXYLK & Jeremiah Meece produced debut single from Wallace’s upcoming Faggot EP (via label FUTUREHOOD). SPOOKY MIX, made in solidarity with the #BLACKLIVESMATTER movement, mixes Wallace’s interest in vogue and hip-hop music with darker, more sterile bass and techno tracks, which allow the energy of the vocal tracks to be continued for a longer period of time, creating a listening experience that evenly spaces out emotion. This economy of energy allows for the listener never to be bogged down by the burden of rage that is part of this mix (though it is still very present) so the overall experience is healing even though it never shies away from confrontation. The haunting, reapproriated KKK image accompanying the mix looms, and the mix is the artillery looking straight back at it. This artillery is full of bone-shaking bass but also uses more delicate sounds: watery synths, soft opera, and bells to inspire awakening. It’s an incredibly difficult task to make instrumental music feel political, but Wallace nevertheless creates many access points that allow this endeavor to succeed.
