Composer Michael Gordon’s meditative, post-minimalist work Timber is getting the remix treatment from Tim Hecker, Fennesz, Oneohtrix Point Never, Squarepusher, Jóhann Jóhannsson, and more. Timber Remixed will be out October 28 via Cantaloupe Music. Listen to Fennesz’s dense reinterpretation of a fragment of the composition streaming below.
Timber was first premiered in The Netherlands in 2011 and subsequently released on CD. The five-part composition is scored entirely for six simantras: 2x4 bars of wood that make slightly different pitches when struck, to be played by six different musicians. Listeners incorrectly assumed that there were electronics in the piece, a misconception that ultimately inspired Gordon to ask some of his favorite electronic music producers to rework the album.
Besides a limited-edition vinyl, Remixed will be released as a double-CD package containing the electronic renditions and a live recording of Timber by New York City’s Mantra Percussion. Grab it here.
