Whoa, talk about an AVALANCHE of chopped-up, sample-based experimental hip-hop music news, guys!!! HA.
Seriously, though: those mysterious, pie-in-the-sky, flaming-pie, pie-eyed, pied pipers known as The Avalanches have just announced a whole crap ton of stuff, and it’s guaranteed to revolutionize your concept of music for the next… 30 minutes or so, AT LEAST. Let’s start unpackin’!
First things first — in case you didn’t read the headline to this story AT ALL (which would be bizarre, but okay!), the good ol’ Astrelwerks label is reissuing the band’s seminal 2000 album Since I Left You on the extremely turntable-appropriate format of “limited edition vinyl” on January 27, 2017, which will be available “exclusively at independent record stores.” I’ve been told that this record is TMT’s version of Emergency & I (though I can’t remember by whom exactly), so yeah, it’s a pretty hyperbolically big deal.
Second, and almost as important: in addition to the standard black vinyl deal with which lesser bands like Radiohead and Paul McCartney & Wings are usually perfectly satisfied, there’s going to be a “strictly limited” edition of 5,000 pressed colored vinyl… and WE THE FANS get to help pick the color! That’s right: unlike the 2016 presidential election, our individual voices might actually have some palpable effect on the outcome! To vote for either (a) your favorite color, or (b) what you think the Avalanches’ favorite color is (totally cerulean blue), GO HERE NOW AND MAKE YOUR PATHETIC VOICE HEARD. The winning vinyl color will be announced November 29, at which point the album will be available for pre-order.
Third, they’ve also just unveiled a new video for the ebullient track “Because I’m Me,” a song from this year’s “long-awaited” (a.k.a. not-yet-old-enough-to-be-as-legendary-as-Since I Left You) follow-up album Wildflower. It was filmed on location in New York, directed by Greg Brunkalla, and features enough bouncy horns and strings to have sufficiently warranted my use of the word “ebullient” to describe it. Here it is. Look out below!
