That hushed but huge Urthsla sound - Takoma Park by way of Berlin, where this fine A Giant Fern release was recorded. On paper, Mal Auf Mal consists of fingerstyle guitar and the odd wisp of ambient vapor. Urthsla brings an affecting depth to this oft dealt deal, and has made a real and freeing journey into the guitar/drone zone - minimal AND lush. There’s vocals too, as on the Sam Beam-ian whisper architecture of “Dream Catalogue,” a quiet loop de loop positioned at some stasis point between going back and moving on. Stirring.
