Wow…Cold Cave?!?!
In the words of the inimitable Ben Kenobi, “that’s a name that I’ve not heard in a long time.” Especially considering Cold Cave’s last release was a 2016 single — which, here in the back-half of shitty 2017, feels like an eternity ago.
Fans may recall that The project of the NYC-based Wesley Eisold hasn’t really been the focus of perspiring listener anticipation since Cherish the Light Years (2010) came out on Matador, after which said-album was quasi-disowned by Eisold as the “Cold Cave that I can’t even stand to hear.” Sooo…really, we’re essentially looking at eight years since his last authentic studio album. (Go ahead and count the Full Cold Moon compilation of singles if you want; I’m still claiming a relative absence from the scene, god damn it!!)
But then again: all of this only sounds like “absence” if we don’t consider Cold Cave’s reliable and relentless tour schedule every year. And, like clockwork, Eisold has just announced a new round of dates beginning in September (including European dates supporting The Jesus and Mary Chain. They’re not so “absent” anymore, either, didn’t you know?)
A press release also talks about more “exciting” Cold Cave news to come, so maybe (finally?) we’ll get a studio album full of new synth jams throwing back to that awkward transitional period in the late 1970s? Eisold’ll really be “back” when that happens!
