Phew; for a second there, I thought that humanity had flipped into an alternate reality, where the past became “new” again, and where previously-discovered albums got re-released to our (admittedly) conspicuous excitement. Instead, all Ty Segall did was release another self-titled album this year — after the initial one back in 2008.
Luckily, — despite the widespread praise of that new album (and societal wonderment at the release of antoher iPhone) — the Bay Area multi-instrumentalist has got us back on the right temporal track with the announcement of Freedom’s Goblin, a new(er) and considerably less self-titled album, out January 26 on Drag City! In fact, it’s the only album of its name in the history of the Universe. I think?
Hey, speaking of “the universe,” an expansive and liberated mindset reportedly played a huge role in making Freedom’s Goblin which Segall intimates was the musical equivalent of an everything-stew. It was recorded piecemeal at five different studios in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Memphis; and according to official press release, the goal was to “embrace any approach necessary to communicate new heights and depths.” The result purports to a crazy mix of Segall-style pop-ness spread over 19 tracks. You can hear five of them below.
