It has been almost a decade since I first locked eyes and ears and heart on Toronto talent Sandro Perri. Playing with the avant ambush of Vancouver’s Fond of Tigers for a CBC recording, the session was a quickly-rehearsed but gloriously synergic set, but Perri’s unique songwriting vision shone through like humble star. Near to the tenth anniversary of that special event, Perri will release his latest masterclass in mood and atmosphere on September 14 through the asterism at Constellation Records.
Since that first blush, Perri has had a commendable tendency to spread his musical love over a dizzying display of solo and band releases (Polmo Polpo, Glissandro 70, Great Lake Swimmers), collaborations, and guest appearances; but In Another Life is his first album under his own name since 2011’s Impossible Spaces. With guest vocal spots by Dan Bejar (Destroyer) and André Ethier (The Deadly Snakes) on the second and third parts of “Everybody’s Paris” respectively, the album ultimately gives the gifted musician and producer the chance to illuminate his gentle and genuine singularity with pure, disarming sweetness.
Listen below to a few transcendent moments of the long and exhilarating winding road that is In Another Life’s sweeping title track, then swoon on over here to pre-order the CD, DL, and 180g LP. First impressions stick hard. Seconds — many of them in this case — stick harder.
