Dan Carey Bailey dropped a couple of these cassette thingies on Athens-based \NULL|Z0NE//, most recently last year’s brilliant The Great Southeastern Dissatisfaction, and he’s defected from one Georgia label to another, now Atlanta’s Already Dead Tapes, for his new brilliant work The Driver. FULL DISCLOSURE: I helped seal the deal with Already Dead. (Well, that may be taking a bit too much credit — it was more, “Hi! You guys would like each other.”)
The point is the brilliance — the vast shimmering talent rippling forth in powerful waves of undiluted majesty from the heart of my stereo speakers.
Or, uh, something less hyperbolic. Like, “Ooh, this Carey tape is a fun one.”
Yeah, let’s go with that.
I’m not sure who does the intricate-psychedelic-prog-with-eastern-flourishes thing like Carey, and maybe I don’t want to know, because then my attention would surely shift, and I will KEEP IT RIGHT HERE, thank you very much. The Driver is a song cycle as dense as it is breezy, the melodies light and accessible but so knotty and penetrating that you have to kind of pay attention in order to experience their impact. So basically you can listen to it no matter what mood you’re in and still have a great time with it.
Meaning that you can basically listen to it 24/7, 365.
Aw, yeah.
Hey, do you think early 1970s Mike Oldfield and Vangelis and Tangerine Dream would make a cute baby together? Me too!
