This is strange. A few months ago, I did a search for the band "Liars" and "Liar’s Academy" came up. At the time, I imagined an emo-pop band a la Saves the Day. Somehow, the band’s new EP landed my way. I look to see what label it’s on and see that it’s from Equal Vision records: a hardcore label from my hardcore past. At this point, I’m thinking that this will definitely be hardcore. Imagine my surprise to hear The Goo Goo Dolls blasting from my own stereo. I was so scared someone might hear it. I lowered it and gave it a shot. You can almost see the music video for this stuff: Dark club, everyone’s drinking beers and playing pool. Lonesome, harmless melodic rock band starts playing songs about some girl who left and broke some hearts. I could write about each track but to me, this EP is just one long giant track. No song stands out or offers anything different or unique. Liar’s Academy ought to be on MTV. It’s that pristine. There’s not a note out of place, zero emotion shown; it's ‘by-the-numbers’ pop. Four tracks long and devoid of any originality, fans of the Wallflowers and Ryan Adams have found their new favorite band.
