Girlfriend: the holy grail of power pop. It's a sugary, melodic album, but adds the extra punch of electric guitar power, hence the genre name. Robert Quine and Lloyd Cole's guitars, in addition to Sweet's own, lend the album an edge that gave it a bite when it was released. Now, it makes the CD good, and keeps the dust of early-90's corniness from seeping in. The title track, opener ("Divine Intervention"), acoustic numbers (including "I Thought I Knew You", which is great), and even album filler are fat-free and perfect. Sweet's been a little subpar lately, but this album retains its charm through infinite listens. Pop lovers, why don't you have this yet?
