In The Lord of the Flies, Piggy’s glasses are a figurative and potentially literal link back to civilization: figurative because they could only have been constructed by the so-called civilized world, not on the island; potentially literal because they might be used to start a signal fire. But the glasses are broken, then stolen by Jack and his band of savages, then Piggy gets snuffed out, and the kids are discovered up by the British Navy, leaving us to ponder whether the world they’re returning to is really any more civilized than the primitive savagery of island life.
Listening to Piggies Glasses by Melbourne beatfucker Aoi is like imagining a sequel to The Lord of the Flies in which Jack and Roger stop crying, say fuck it, drop another boulder, this one on the British naval officer, then kill Ralph, take control of a British naval vessel, and set sail with a pig skull atop the masthead, only to discover that there’s a time machine aboard the ship, so they go to the future, where they learn about hip-hop through the eyes of two kids who’ve been let into the club because the bouncer mistook them for X-Clan’s backup dancers, but then they’re sucked back into the Mesolithic era, where they fit right in and teach cavemen about graffiti.
With that in mind, you can stream Piggies Glasses straight through below or download all 13 pieces of it via Aoi’s Bandcamp.
