Dub, as always, holds the world together. Pioneering British dance duo (and founders of seminal label Ninja Tune) Coldcut have teamed up with Adrian Sherwood of On-U Sound, one of the first British labels to disseminate dub sounds into the UK dance world, setting off a bass-heavy domino effect which continues to drop today. Coldcut were direct beneficiaries of this legacy — in the record’s press notes, member Matt Black reflects that the label’s first releases were “a unique and powerful influence on us … [t]he whole Coldcut mash up thing was partly inspired by On-U.”
And even further: the team-up’s inaugural dub-acid single, “Divide and Rule,” features an assist from seminal vocalist Junior Reid, who featured on early Coldcut single “Stop This Crazy Thing”, which was in turn also remixed by Adrian Sherwood (that’s some 1989 shit). But wait, that’s not all: the new track also features vocals from Lee “Scratch” Perry, stacking the song’s participants to intimidating heights. It’s good, it’s dank, listen to it.
“Divide and Rule” can be streamed here via Spotify. Outside the Echo Chamber, the debut LP from Coldcut x On-U Sound, arrives May 19 on Ahead Of Our Time, on traditional vinyl/digital formats as well as a limited edition 7” box set which will be “made with recycled labels, housed in brown paper ‘grocery’ bags and contain two Coldcut 45 adapters.” Rad.
