Cyndi Lauper adds, aside from her voice, nearly nuthin’ (+ 21st Century clara production with up-close organ) and takes away something — those ghostly flame-like back-up vocals and belly-dancer zill accents — in her arrangement of “Funnel of Love.” Still, I’d rather hear this cover on the radio, or any Wanda Jackson cover, any day over whatever it is with all that indie-ass whistlin’ sing-songy auto-tune that they’re spinning over the 5.1.5 quadracomm at FedEx or wherever the fuck I’m supposed to buy my groceries. It’s a cover of a good song, reminding one to give the original “Funnel of Love” another whirl or two, reminding one to throw a couple back and rent a private karaoke room. One day, I gather, someone will hear this version and do a cover of this Cyndi Lauper original. Let the good times roll. Lest we forget.
