Beijing duo 工工工’s President Piano Co. Tape is music for the modern urban rambler, pure ballistic busking. Don’t let their matching black turtlenecks fool you: the dirt is intentional.
This tape was recorded live at President Piano Co., an iconic rehearsal studio in Mongkok, Hong Kong, that opened in 1978.
President Piano Co. Tape is made for crooning on a junk schooner cutting towards Causeway Bay, or for blasting while riding horseback through downtown Los Angeles (hard “g”). It swangs with Canton twang. It can all be done standing or walking.
We used the studio’s guitar, bass and amplifiers, which have been worn down over almost 40 years of use.
Visible and audible flaws are the point. 工工工’s about raw and unprocessed guitar + bass glimmer with a clear Velvet-een sheen, vocals mostly from the stomach.

There is no piano.
