Girl Unit’s other Night Slugs project Hysterics is defined by the creation of bangers using only soft, almost pleasant, machine-made rhythms, yet somehow the result is unbelievably hard. “Code Switch” has always been the best example of this, but “Club Life,” the first track from the first Night Slugs release of the year, Hysteric’s Hysterics, now competes. The track is straightforward, but that never means it loses its steam, as it’s made up of rhythms that are a combination of intricate and simple that pull you in but never confuse. There’s a tenderness to how danceable it is. Philip Gamble, the mastermind behind Girl Unit and Hysterics, has created two very different personas for a label that prides themselves on a very specific type of sound, an impressive feat, especially for a track that features no gimmicks or crazy surprises. “Club Life” trusts its own beats!
