An instrument speaks - unified and in many voices. HUNTER HUNTRESS HAWKER, fourth solo release from Laura Cannell, was done live, in single takes, in a crumbling church on the Suffolk Coast. As you might imagine, resonating in such a setting, Cannell’s violin carries forward a reverent charge, an ancient echo from the ruin-stone. Cannell’s overbow fiddle technique slacks bow over strings, creating chords, and also, I would imagine, more drag. On a song like “Persuasion” the overbow effect sounds the fiddle not nimble or sprightly, but with an effort that opens to a more contemplative dimension. Slowly, the warped wood and horsehair unsurface a sense of medieval devotion.
