Coming to you straight from recently launched Singapore-based label Evening Chants, Meitei’s Kwaidan / 怪談 is here to warm up the fall season with a whole different level of time slide. Sounding both ancient and futuristic at once with its spliced-up koto samples and still-water-on-a-lake tape ambiance, it’s a heavy distillation of what Meitei describes as the “Japanese mood,” casting an eerie web of folk mysticism in between all the ringing chimes and shifting spoken-word monologues. It’s a little spooky, but not so much that you couldn’t still bump it on the way to dropping the kids off at the neighborhood haunted house just to get them in the mood.
Listen to Kwaidan / 怪談 below, and grip the tape from Evening Chants right here.
