Deer, foxes, hedgehogs, and owls send their little reverberations through Leeds as heard and manipulated by sound artist Melanie Ó Dubhshláine. “Bats” is one track in a collection that includes pieces dedicated to those aftermentioned animals. With additional instrumentation from Anna Peaker, it flutters through my throat like an especially affecting incantation. The banal is communicated in an extraordinary language that cycles back through the fantastical in everyday words. A track so conducive to endless loops and loose ends. And some wish to be among them, at night, on air. To enter the upper rooms of a tall house. Could fish flash through the branches? Could an eel peek out?
