Like the beginning of the day, warming up the frier, or clearing out the organ dust, “Mucuna” by Michael Henning & Philip Ringler stretches like the night before happened. As if it’s the sound of the entire day birthing to light. And although mucuna is technically a bean plant (and not necessarily the pod of beans to eat), the music of “Mucuna” is sort of that photosynthesis process that goes beyond just the singular plant kingdom. It’s as if both Michael Henning & Philip Ringler have found a way to provide living growth through the art of sound, which isn’t a myth when it comes to vegetative life, as people believe playing music for and talking to plant life helps it grow and not feel alone. I mean, that movie the Happening, right? Was that a thing?
Michael Henning & Philip Ringler are making their own thing, and Golden Cloud Tapes is definitely down to fuck with their style. I mean, consider what the label has put out just this year alone, and tell me this wasn’t their next step. Give a good listen to “Mucuna.” And keep an eye peel for their new tape!
