Slip through the dawn before it rises up off your fingers, tugging between a candle that sat by the window as your memory of it turned into a lodged distinction of pine. Gated but not lost, it looses and wanes, descending towards a parallel of glass, brief in name only, held onto by water chestnut, the table set ages ago but left waiting until the moment finally settled on a time before we called it an evening. There aren’t any mirages here ~ make it into a package, or a goblet, or a slow evaporation, then let it swirl about gently, like an animated spirit of dust, or the sound of a phone ringing quietly in an empty home.
