BRAK, BRACK, BRAKE: 3. “The bursting of surges on the sea-shore, broken waves rolling towards the sea-shore” (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl.; 1914 Angus Gl.)
On his newest tape titled brak, “fiercely experimental” London musician Phil Maguire explores waves of sound. Employing subtle sine tone oscillations and field recordings as sonic source material, the two short pieces simply titled “1” and “2” gently explore timbre and presence. The panning sine waves intertwine with cryptic found sound, but Maguire places a strong focus on silence, too. This is an excellent, restrained effort, both in terms of content and length, and a thoroughly remedying listen.
brak is out now via Scottish tape label Soft Error, as a limited edition of 50 hand-numbered cassette tapes.
